MORE THAN A CENTURY OF SERVING THE STUDENTS OF OUR COMMUNITY

The Anaheim Union High School District is the premiere school system in the premiere county in the state of California. We have so much to celebrate.

Founded in 1898, the AUHSD has a student population of approximately 31,000, making it one of the largest school districts in the state.

The District covers 46 square miles and stretches across the cities of Anaheim, Cypress, Buena Park, La Palma and Stanton. Our students, who speak 49 different languages in their homes, attend 21 campuses, and come to us from five feeder elementary districts.

We have almost 3,000 employees, making the District the third-largest employer in the city of Anaheim. Our physical plant is enormous—with 21 campuses equal to the size of two Anaheim stadiums, plus parking lots. The community is benefiting from $249 million in improvements to our campuses, thanks to the voter-approved Measure H bond measure.

We are proud of the many academic accomplishments of our students, and the teachers who spur them on. Four of our campuses have been recognized as Distinguished Schools by the California Department of Education: Lexington Junior High School, Cypress High School, Western High School, and Oxford Academy. Oxford also earned National Blue Ribbon status from the U.S. Department of Education, while Savanna High School was designated as a National P-21 Exemplar School.

Additionally, U.S. News and World Report awards gold, silver, and bronze medals to the Best High Schools in the nation, and Oxford Academy was ranked No. 16 nationally (and No. 2 in California, according to California Department of Education rankings.) Six high schools earned silver medals: Cypress, Kennedy, Katella, Loara, Anaheim, and Western, while Hope School for the severely disabled also earned national recognition.

Meanwhile, planning is under way for full implementation of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in 2014-2015. The newly adopted standards are a national set of academic expectations for college and career success that provide a clear understanding of what students are expected to learn. We are clearly ahead of many other districts in our planning for the Common Core.

We have established 28 career pathways in 12 industries, all designed to lead to meaningful post-secondary employment. Enrollment in Career Technical Education pathway courses totals more than 11,000 students. We also have about 600 students enrolled in 17 online courses, from health to accounting to AP level classes.

We are the first school district in Orange County to offer graduates a Seal of Biliteracy on their diplomas. To attain the seal, students must show mastery of  English and Spanish, Japanese, Mandarin, French, Korean, Vietnamese, or Arabic. The program recognizes that mastery of two languages is a valuable asset for participation in the diverse 21st century economy.

We have maintained marvelous programs in music, art, and athletics, despite severe budgetary challenges. Our junior high school intramural-athletics program has a student participation rate of more than 50 percent. More than 21,000 students are enrolled in visual and performing arts classes, more than 9,000 students participate in activities, and more than 6,500 students participate in athletics. Our boys’ and girls’ high school sports teams take home their share of California Interscholastic Federation championships.

Through our PTAs, School Site Councils, English Learner Advisory Committees, school foundations, alumni associations, and booster clubs, AUHSD enjoys strong relationships with all of our parent communities. To benefit our students, AUHSD also builds lasting partnerships with our local businesses (AIME), public libraries (APL Student Success), colleges and universities (Anaheim Pledge).
