This past Saturday, Dec, 16th, over 400 7th and 8th-grade students gathered at Dale Junior High School in the morning to participate in the AUHSD Junior High Solo & Ensemble Festival.

This is an annual event has been a district tradition for over 30 years. At the festival, individual and small groups of students from all of our junior high schools performed for music judges, who used standardized criteria to reflect on and rate each student or ensemble's performance.

Each ensemble or soloist received ten minutes with an adjudicator, during which they played their piece, received verbal and written feedback on their musical performance, and then took home a printed certificate of their rating. Adjudication was provided by over many of our high school teachers, retired band directors, student teachers, and professional musicians, all who volunteered their morning to listen to our students!

It is especially important for our students, who do not always have the economic means to take private lessons. The solo ensemble clinic gives our students the opportunity to be privately coached/adjudicated on a Saturday morning!

Many parents brought their children and were able to sit in and hear the comments, and quite a few expressed their appreciation for this type of event.

Jodi Urquidez at Dale did an outstanding job in organizing and scheduling the day.
