Thank you for visiting the website of the Anaheim Union High School District. It is my pleasure as district superintendent to share some important information about our district and the community that it serves:

• AUHSD has a long tradition of educational service. High school education was initially provided through the community’s elementary school district, which was formed in the 1870s. The high school district was created as a separate school system in 1898.

• As is true with many California districts, AUHSD boundaries are older than most of the cities that it serves. For many years the district was the largest union school district in California. It covered 46 square miles, bordered by Fullerton, the Santa Ana River, Garden Grove, and the Los Angeles county line. It currently serves the communities of Anaheim, Cypress, La Palma, Stanton, and portions of Buena Park.

• Thirteen of the district’s schools showed improvement on the state’s API ranking. Our teachers have shown tremendous dedication in improving students’ academic success, and our students have responded in kind.

• Three of our campuses have been recognized as California Distinguished Schools by the California Department of Education: Lexington Junior High School, Cypress High School, and Western High School. Oxford Academy has been recognized as one of the Top 10 highs schools in the nation by Newsweek and US News and World Report.

• Our 2009-10 Teachers of the Year are Mr. Dean Elder, science teacher at Anaheim High School; Ms. Phyllis Fukumoto, science teacher at Dale Junior High School; and Ms. Karen Pollack, reading teacher at Brookhurst Junior High School. Our Classified Employee of the Year is Mrs. Connie Cobian, district receptionist. These excellent employees serve as official representatives of all those who serve our students and communities.

• Work is nearly complete on the final bond-funded construction projects in the district at Katella High School and Anaheim High School. Bond-funded work is finished at Cypress High School, Kennedy High School, Lexington Junior High School, South Junior High School, Loara High School, and Oxford Academy. Those projects represent a $257 million investment in the community. Future plans include using city redevelopment money and state matching funds to modernize four campuses, and other funding sources to make improvements at all campuses, in line with the Board of Trustees’ belief in providing equitable and adequate facilities for all students.

I invite you to read through the many items that are included in our website. You will learn about an exciting school district, which is clearly focused on instruction and instructional support for its students.

Thank you for your interest in the Anaheim Union High School District, where the spirit of education has been celebrated since 1898.
